Our Story of Accountability
Independent Steel Company was founded in 2000 to do one thing: provide reliable, no-nonsense steel supply to regional NSW.
For over 25 years, we’ve been the supplier that builders, fabricators, and rural operators count on when projects are on the line.
We’re not a corporate giant and we’re not a budget outlet. We’re an owner-run, family business with three local yards around NSW you can visit, with real stock on the ground, and a track record of solving problems other suppliers create.
When you work with us, you’re working with people who know the region, understand the work, and take responsibility for getting it right.
Meet Darren, Owner of ISC
Residing at the Quenbeyan location, Darren has been in the steel trade for over 20 years, and knows a thing or two when it comes to steel supply.
He started the Independent Steel Company because he saw too many projects getting held up by unreliable supply, incorrect advice, and suppliers who wouldn’t take a call when things went wrong.
He built this business on a simple promise: stock what you sell, give straightforward advice, and stand by your word.
Today, you can still speak to him directly. That’s not a marketing line; it’s how we operate. It means accountability starts at the top, not in a call centre queue.
If we get it wrong, Darren personally ensures it’s fixed.
Our Standards & Approach
We’re not trying to be the biggest or the cheapest. We’re focused on being the most reliable and trustworthy. That means we operate on a few straightforward principles:
We only sell what we’d use ourselves.
Around 75% of our steel is Australian-sourced. While some items like gal pipe, cattle products, and certain beams are imported, they all meet relevant Australian Standards. We prioritise quality and compliance because we know your project’s integrity depends on it.
If we can’t do it right, we don’t do it.
We’ll refuse a job if the timeline is unrealistic or if it requires cutting corners on safety or compliance. We do not offer fabrication, manufacturing, or take-offs, ensuring we focus on what we do best. We’d rather lose a sale than let a customer down.
Advice is for your benefit, not ours.
We’ll give you straight, practical advice based on what works in regional NSW conditions. No upselling, no BS - just what you need to get the job done.
If we get it wrong, we fix it.
